Day 1
Saturday:
-
Warwick
Castle - Leamington Spa - We
leave London, with our first port of call being the lovely
Chiltern Hills. This area of the English countryside is
close to London, but still remains relatively undiscovered.
We'll see canals and barges, visit poet John Milton's 17th
Century cottage and see the outskirts of original Quaker
meeting place of William Penn, founder of Stratford
Pennsylvania. Penn and his family are buried here and nearby
we will also find a barn made from the wood of The
Mayflower. Later we head north and drive to the mediaeval
Warwick and visit the fabulous Warwick Castle before going
to our base for the next three nights at nearby Royal
Leamington Spa. (We will be staying in the Regents Hotel OR
a working Stud farm on the outskirts of
Stratford)
Day
2 Sunday: - The Cotswolds - Stow on the Wold - Burford - Pub
Lunch - A full
leisurely day in the wonderful Cotswolds. We'll explore the
wonderful honey coloured villages, which are so much a part
of this picturesque countryside, see ancient parish churches
unchanged over the centuries and visit market towns like
Chipping Camden, Burford, Broadway and Stow-on-the-Wold. The
day would not be complete without seeking out a traditional
country p ub
in which to have a spot of lunch. (We will be staying in the
Regents Hotel OR a working Stud farm on the outskirts of
Stratford)
Day 3
Monday : Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon - Blenheim Palace
- Rollwright Stones
-Stratford-upon-Avon with its Shakespearean sites is first.
Stratford can be busy, being England's most popular tourist
destination outside of London, but as we're staying close
by, we'll arrive early and leave before the large tour
coaches arrive! There'll be free time to explore this
interesting town before we visit the lesser known house of
Shakespeare's mother and take a most informative tour
learning about life in the 1500's. Later we'll visit a house
from the opposite end of the scale, Blenheim Palace,
Churchill's treasure house. We will also see the Rollright
Stones, and if we have time, Winston Churchill's Tomb. (We
will be staying in the Regents Hotel OR a working Stud farm
on the outskirts of Stratford)
Day 4
Tuesday: Oxford - Dorchester - Henly-upon-Thames
- The
'dreaming spires' of Oxford will be our first port of call.
We'll take a walking tour of this famous University town
before having some free time to shop and explore at leisure.
Later we'll follow the river Thames back to London with
stops at Dorchester, with its ancient abbey and
Henley-on-Thames, home of the famous society regatta. You
will be returned to the London hotel of your
choice.
